Chances are you're a Texan like us and if you're not; you're definitely here for supporting the vintage format. Take a little time to introduce yourself and explain a little as to why you're here.

I've been playing Magic since 1995. At first my decks were very basic and casual, but that changed around 2000 when I began proxying out decks posted on sites like Beyond Dominia and various other websites. In those days my deck design and strategy was influenced by Oscar Tan, Rapheal Caron, and Battista. without primers from the original BD mills I more than likely would have never started playing T1. With the Advent of The Mana Drain I had built much of what I needed for my Xcc deck. Zhrebus and Menendian were among my two favorite players and honestly I was quite upset when Steven sold himself out to StarCityGames making premium articles. He still remains one of my favorite T1 influences though. I can't hate the man who tries to make an honest buck. What I hope to accomplish with the advent of this forum is to establish a strong metagame regionally in Texas. If the only thing seperating me from a good vintage tournament is three hours by vehicle, then I've done my job. let's get this format going!

When I was 16 (1996) my brother in law started playing the game and introduced me too it one day. He had a crappy WR burn/healing salve deck that ran uthden trolls, pearled unicorns, shivan dragons, and serra angels. I thought it was fun and enjoyed the concepts of the game. I started developing my own decks (always loved black) and bought my first few packs ath the tail end of unlimited/beginning of 4th ed. I ripped my first 4th edition packs to get nightmare and some crap, and pulled a vesuvan doppleganger and a fork out of my unlimited packs. I began to build with the colors I had decent cards from. It ended up being BR hyppie/bolt/rack/mindtwist/dragonwhelp/fireball etc. It was fairly cool and good for the 96-98 time period.
My first big tourney was with my bro-in-law at Nuetral Ground (NYC) in an iceage/alliances sealed deck tournament. I ripped the nuts with jesters mask, balduvian horde, deadly insects, FoW, etc...then we had to write the list of cards and TRADE with someone else. I got handed a pile of General Jarkheld and infinitely worse cards. That was to be my deck and it got crushed....needless to say the guy with my original cards finished very strong (may have won, but we left after scrubbing out).
After that point, I really got into deck building. I met a couple kids in HS that played (one is my best friend, barring my wife, to this day). We played a lot and owned local tourneys of 15-20 kids in a small townie shop. Eventually I went to college and then moved in with my friends from high school (the aforementioned) in Richmond, VA. After getting my first real job in 2001, my first use for extra cash was to invest in all the power cards. I followed that up with duals, library, etc...and now have a playset of almost every playable type 1 card (1 of restricteds). I grew fonder and fonder of Vintage, ebaying the playsets of whatever type 2 stuff was useful in Vintage and turning my focus to it.
I began to deckbuild and test on apprentice and with friends. My friend ran The deck (keeper) and my best friend ran sligh. I built a reanimater deck with sutured ghoul after judgement came out and played my best friend (Jake). He drew 7 and I won the die roll. I opened with swamp, ritual, ritual, buried alive (drednaught x 2 + sutured ghoul), shallow grave, swinging for 24. He said "thanks for letting me draw 7". We played g2. He went mountain, go. I went swamp, ritual, lotus, buried alive, shallow grave...he has yet to play a game of magic since.
After making my friend quit magic, I turned my fascination towards workshop decks...bought a playset at $30 each (which I sold regretably at $80 each) and built a UB juggernaut deck. It was good, and fairly broken for its time, but was missing the control it needed to consistently ride out a threat...until...
Trinisphere
I quickly slapped 4 into the deck and played around with it. It was sick. I had a bunch of toolbox type stuff in it and it was basically fast workshoppable fatties with trinisphere. A couple friends from Team Shortbus gave me a few helpful suggestions and I played in my first Vintage tourney soon after, the first SCGP9 tourney in Richmond. I dubbed the deck "The Man Show" and piloted through 160+ players without losing a single game (2-0d everyone) up to the semifinals where i lost a game but won the match. I then got the prize split from the finals matchup (took lotus) and then lost the match due to not mulliganing cause the guy wanted to go home and SCG wouldn't let me concede. (I just wanted the lotus, not the victory).
I took the deck for SCGP9 #2 sometime later, getting beaten out by oath and managed 8th to take home a pearl.
Later, I returned to my trials with 4xtrinisphere and added mask/naught, dubbed "The Riddler" for SCGP9 #3. This one rode out to the final's victory and my second won lotus (prize split again).
Hardly content, I played in SCGP9 #4 (all these in Richmond), and replacing the loss of trini 2-4, I added chalices. This got me 4th and a sapphire.
Finally, I traveled to Syracuse for a tourney where I was issued a game loss for missing the announcement to start the round, then g2, after he started by winning the die roll, even though I should have started after getting a game DQ (1 PA system in 2 game room setup) and was out of T8 contention.
I have yet to play in a magic tourney since. I now live in San Antonio and am starting to host/coordinate my own events locally, as I am not allowed to drive to Dallas to play (I'm married now). That brings me to now...playing on MWS for the past two years sans tourneys or a Vintage scene whatsoever. Team Shortbus is disbanded and thousands of miles away, and the Vintage game I love so much is a virtual reality now. Perhaps the spark can reignite the fire locally? __________________ I know to whom I owe the most loyalty, and I see him in the mirror every day. - Starke of Rath

Been playing MTG since around the time of The Dark. A buddy of mine introduced me to the game and we would play at Legends or Phoenix games on Shepherd near 59. Once I saw what Royal Assassins could do, I started collecting black cards. I've got a kickass black collection to be sure. I'll never forget the HUGE debates over people who thought Royal Assassin could kill a Prodigal Sorcerer and not die himself. That's just too funny.
I kept playing until Homelands and I can honestly say that the set sucked, but that's not what drove me out of MTG. I have to say it was the beer and women that did it. Once I discovered how much fun that was, who needed MTG??
I got back into the game just before Mirrodin when a buddy of mine mentioned MTG and I was like "you used to play that game too?" And so we got back in the game, and introduced it to another buddy of mine. We pretty much played Battle Circle where you had to attack the opponent on your left and defend against the opponent on the right. 3-way Magic was odd but fun.
We found a store called Dragons Breath and met other players and tried our best to promote Type-1. My main fault with other formats is I want to be able to play with the cards I already own. I wasn't so concerned at the time about power as I had none. We held a few tournies on Wednesday, which I believe was an odd choice....but o well. Soon enuf not many people started showing, then the store closed down altogether. With the exception of random get togethers to play MTG, the closing of SEVERAL stores in the Houston area spelled doom for Magic.
I have only went to 1 Starcity games event, and I belive it was the very next one following Trinisphere restriction. I played 5 color Juggernaut Aggro and I managed to get 11th place out of (I want to say) 140 or so. After that, competitive MTG was for me. No more building lame(but fun) 6 card combos that can win 4 turns later.
I would like to get back in the game as much as I can. I am busy with life and such, but with a little heads up, I'm always down for a game. If ever in the Houston area just shoot me a pm.

I've shut down all competition in a store in Birmingham, Alabama and on the north side of San Antonio with my awesome skills. I can also boast of causing someone to flat out quit the game. My Eternal rating is 2nd in the city and 4th in the State.
PH34R M3!
P.S. Take this post half heartedly.
Waiting for Smmenen to send back my Mirage Dark Rituals since 2000

I can boast Unrestricted.dec. A deck that is too fast for ancestral recall; although I wish I could actually use it in a tournament... I too have made people quit playing magic; I think it's of the utmost importance for a good Vintage player to do so. I've never played in DCI ranked, everytime I've tried, my points never got posted, so I said to hell with it. I'm sure I can hold my own and make some T8's though. Welcome =D
